Scientific Name: Contopus sordidulus
Subspecies: There are 4 subspecies, 2 in the Western US. Las Vegas birds are Contopus sordidulus veliei.
Order/Family: Passeriformes/Tyrannidae (Tyrant Flycatchers)
Description: Western Wood-Pewee is a small flycatcher, dark grayish brown above with two wing bars and a white dusky chest below with a light yellow belly, very similar in appearance to its close relative the Eastern Wood-Pewee (Contopus virens). It has a peaked crown with a white throat that has vertical streaks and a faint eye ring.
Distribution: Their breeding habitat is open wooded areas in western North America. These birds migrate to South America at the end of summer.
Habitat: California black oak forests are examples of suitable nesting habitat for this species of bird.
